WATER STORAGE:

Store a minimum of 14 gal./person for 2 weeks of drinking water, food preparation and minimal hygiene. (Adding a larger barrel or two to your smaller containers would be better.)

[The 1-gallon and 2 ½ gallon type of containers of water available in the grocery store are OK for short-term storage, but not recommended for long-term storage – the plastic is very thin and becomes brittle.]

MY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR LONG-TERM, BULK WATER STORAGE:

Smart & Final: (South wall)
3 gal. containers, pre-filled w/water for about $4/ea. Good storage containers – just like water-cooler bottles, but 3 instead of 5 gal. Not stackable, but easy to get done.

“If you plan to use commercially prepared "spring" or "drinking" water, keep the water in its original sealed container. Change and replace the water at least once a year.” [American Red Cross]

WalMart: (Sporting Goods) [I couldn’t find them at near this price on-line.]

6 gal. containers, empty, about $8/ea. Fairly slim & tall, shape similar to gas containers on back of old jeeps. Not stackable, but you can store several in a small floor space.

7 gal. containers, empty, about $8/ea. Cubes about 11"x11"x16". Stackable, but not more than two high.

Water Treatment for Self-Storage: Clean and rinse container thoroughly. Fill with clean water (if using a hose, use a clean, drinking-grade hose, not a yard hose).

"Should water be treated before storing it?

If your local water is treated commercially by a water treatment utility, you do not have to treat the water before storing it. Treating commercially-treated water with bleach is superfluous and not necessary. Doing so does not increase storage life. It is important to change and replace stored water every six months or more frequently.” [American Red Cross]
